I AM: KLOFAMA — The New Face of Hardtechno

Three years ago, Mats van Biljouw was playing his first tracks to friends from his bedroom in Horst, Limburg. Today, the 23-year-old travels the world as DJ and producer KLOFAMA, performing for thousands of people at major international stages and rapidly establishing himself as one of the standout artists of a new hardtechno generation.
But who is Mats when the lights go out?
That question lies at the heart of I AM: KLOFAMA, a new short documentary by production company CULT. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film follows Van Biljouw during a pivotal year in which his career accelerates at an unprecedented pace.
From airports and hotel rooms to backstage areas and packed dance floors, the documentary captures the demanding reality behind KLOFAMA’s rapid rise. At the same time, it returns to Horst, where Van Biljouw grew up and where he still finds his way back to the people and places that shaped him.
The contrast is striking. On stage, KLOFAMA exists in a world that is becoming faster, bigger and more intense by the day. Surrounded by thousands of fans, powerful sound systems and an ever-growing international profile, he has become part of a global hardtechno movement. Away from the spotlight, however, he remains Mats: the boy from Horst, raised in an environment where staying grounded is not an ambition, but simply the norm.

Beyond the artist persona
I AM: KLOFAMA is not only a documentary about the rise of an artist. It is also an exploration of what happens when someone’s public identity develops faster than their personal sense of self.
How do you remain true to yourself when thousands of people know a version of you that has grown larger than who you really are? What does international recognition do to someone who still returns home to his parents? And how do ambition, performance pressure, constant travel and success affect a young artist when they begin to accumulate at an accelerating pace?
Rather than presenting success as a straightforward fairytale, the film looks at the more complex reality behind it. It reveals sides of Van Biljouw that the public rarely sees: sitting at the kitchen table, spending time with friends who knew him before KLOFAMA, driving through his hometown and having honest conversations in which the façade can briefly come down.
In these quieter moments, feelings of doubt, loneliness and relief become tangible. They offer a glimpse of the person behind the artist name—and of the emotional cost that can accompany a life that changes almost overnight.

From bedroom producer to international artist
KLOFAMA’s story also reflects the dramatic changes taking place within the modern music industry. In the past, artists often needed years to build a following through local scenes before reaching an international audience. Today, social media, digital platforms and a distinctive sound can accelerate that journey remarkably quickly.
Van Biljouw is a striking example of this new route to success. What began as making music in his bedroom has developed within only a few years into an international career. During that time, he has performed at some of Europe’s leading hardtechno and electronic music platforms, including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also appeared at the iconic Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Over the past two years, Van Biljouw has sold out multiple all-night-long shows in both the Netherlands and abroad. Those performances demonstrate how quickly he has evolved from emerging talent into an artist capable of attracting large audiences independently and internationally.
That speed is central to the documentary. The film is not only aimed at KLOFAMA’s fans or followers of hardtechno. It also speaks to anyone interested in what it means to suddenly live a highly public life at a young age—and to the challenge of keeping a sense of identity while the world around you continues to expand.
I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
