From the Archives to the Dancefloor: Scarper Revisits a Defining Creative Era on Off-Cuts (2014–2021)

UK electronic producer Scarper has opened up his vault for Off-Cuts (2014–2021), a compelling eight-track collection of previously unreleased music that captures the spirit, depth and dancefloor energy of one of his most productive periods.

Spanning house, techno, acid and leftfield electronica, the release gathers material created around the time of Scarper’s celebrated debut album Warmer Squares and his much-loved 2020 single, “E-Funk.” While these tracks may have spent years sitting in studio folders, there is nothing unfinished about their impact. Carefully selected and polished for release, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is an immersive listen that feels as vital now as it would have at the time of its creation.

The collection showcases the full range of Scarper’s musical identity. Opening track “Skynet” sets the mood with soaring chords and widescreen emotion, offering a powerful introduction to the record’s melodic core. “Steppe” brings a looser, more mischievous energy, driven by playful acid squelches and an unmistakable underground pulse. Meanwhile, “Halocline” stands out for its elegant string arrangements, delivering a moment of pure electronic beauty amid the record’s more club-focused turns.

For Scarper, the project began as an opportunity to revisit ideas that never quite found a home.

“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world,” he says. “It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”

That sense of freedom is central to the album. Rather than attempting to force a single narrative, Off-Cuts (2014–2021)celebrates variety. It moves from reflective, melodic passages to tougher rhythmic workouts with confidence, reflecting an artist who has always refused to be contained by one style.

Scarper’s open-minded approach has earned him considerable support throughout his career. His debut Warmer Squares was met with universal critical acclaim and championed by iconic electronic artists including Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig. His productions have also received radio spins on Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music, while leading outlets such as Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R have highlighted his contribution to the wider electronic landscape.

The renewed attention around “E-Funk,” following a physical release through a new imprint, has also reminded listeners of Scarper’s ability to make records that endure. A bona fide dancefloor weapon on its original release, the track continues to connect because of its raw funk, club-ready energy and timeless production values — qualities that run throughout Off-Cuts (2014–2021).

As a fiercely independent artist releasing almost entirely through his own Plexus Records, Scarper has built a catalogue on his own terms. Whether crafting euphoric melodic pieces or stripped-back underground bangers, his music is united by a love of electronic music’s past, present and future.

Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is not simply a look back. It is proof that Scarper’s archive is full of music worth discovering — and a strong indication that his next chapter will be just as exciting.
