Interview: Møønz talks about his new techno release on MJA The Vision, “Matrix”

Møønz is a Belgian techno artist from Antwerp whose style combines industrial drums and powerful melodies. His new release, Matrix is out now on Clif Jack’s record label MJA the Vision, and includes two of his thrilling original tracks. Møønz is an exciting talent, and we invited him for this interview to learn more about him and his music…

How did you first discover electronic music, and what made you decide to become a DJ?

“I discovered electronic music in my teenage years through radio sessions on Studio Brussel. There was something hypnotic about it, and it had an energy that felt totally different from all the other music I’d heard. What really drove me to DJing was Charlotte de Witte; back then, she went by the name Raving George.

In particular, the way a DJ can control the atmosphere in a room, direct emotions, build tension, and release it at the perfect moment. I wanted to be part of that experience, not only on the dance floor, but also behind the turntables.”

Who are some of your biggest influences, and what makes them so inspiring?

“My influences come from both contemporary artists, and artists who have been active in the scene for a long time. I have always admired producers who push the boundaries of sound, and DJs who tell a story through their sets. What inspires me most, are authentic artists with their own sound who are not afraid to experiment.”

At what point in your career did you decide to start making your own music?

“After DJing for a few years, I had a conversation with a DJ/Producer friend who inspired me so much that I wanted to make my own music.

I wanted to express my own ideas and create something unique that reflected my identity. That is when I started producing, it was a natural step after DJing, and it opened up a whole new creative world for me.”

Can you talk through the concept of the tracks on your new Matrix release?

“Sure, Matrix explores themes such as purity, rawness, and a dark atmosphere.

Each track represents a different layer of that idea, some darker and more rawness, while others are more energetic and club-oriented.

I wanted it to feel like an experience of different sounds in which mechanical elements merge with my personality.”

How do you approach making a new track, and what studio equipment is essential to your sound?

“I always start with a good kick and bass, rather than a fully developed idea. I want to capture the feeling I have in that moment, and from there I gradually build up the layers and structure.

In terms of equipment, I rely heavily on my DAW, a few trusted plugins, and a good set of studio monitors. I also like to use hardware synthesisers when I want something tangible and unpredictable.”

Your new release, Matrix, is out on the MJA the Vision record label, how did you first make contact with the label, and which other imprints have you worked with?

“It was me who made the first move by contacting them with my music, I usually approach labels owners at events they are playing, as I find this more personal. I spoke with Clif Jack who runs MJA the Vision at one of his gigs, and that is also how this release came about.

I am very happy with this amazing collaboration with the label MJA the Vision. I have also had the opportunity to work with a few other labels in the past, including Drehmoment Records, Hautboxx Records, Furious Mother, and Existence-limited (WAE music group).”

In your opinion, what sets DJs apart from bands or other performing artists?

“DJs have a unique relationship with the audience. Instead of playing a fixed set, they in real time adapt to find tracks that match the crowd. They sense the atmosphere in the room, determine the energy from moment to moment. A really good DJ can even influence people’s emotions, and take them on a journey by steering the dance floor in a certain direction. It is a very fluid and reactive form of performing, almost like a conversation between the DJ and the audience.”

What are some of your passions outside of music?

“Besides music, I am very interested in the future of car technology (my current day job falls under the automotive sector), motorcycling, and travel.”
